Nokogiriyama: The Daibutsu

After passing the long path of the 1500 Arhats (but really only a little over 500), I finally arrived at the impressive Daibutsu. In a peaceful clearing sits the stately Daibutsu, who appears meditative on his pedestal within a tranquil atmosphere. At 31m he’s the largest stone-carved Buddha figure in Japan, with a deeply serene expression and posture that acts in harmony with the natural surroundings. The Daibutsu represents Yakushi Nyorai, the Buddha of Healing and he took three years to carve, between 1780 and 1783.
